My office, New Day Counseling is launching a petition to ban the sale and use of synthetic drugs that Mimic an Illicit Drug. Public health officials, local law enforcement, and community members are concerned about the recent surge in the use of such substances. The petition will require 1,000 signatures from Odessa in support of banning these dangerous products. These drugs, with names like K2, Spice and Angry Birds, can be obtained locally and on the internet. They are sold as incense orpotpourri, but are  smoked to produce a high. There is a law against it but due to the chemical makeup, retailers are able to sell it legally. The media, poison control and medical community report that users of these products can have strong psychotic episodes, including extreme paranoia, hallucinations, hypertension, suicidal thoughts and heart attacks. These drugs can have long-term damaging effects, and some have died from using these products.
