This is a petition calling for a ban on the use of speed bumps throughout the UK. What is the point of building nice, smooth roads, then deliberately destroying any chance of a smooth ride with these monstrosities? We live in a developed country, in the 21st century, with mostly good quality roads. Why should we deliberately make those roads very uncomfortable and cumbersome to drive on, just because of a minority of dangerous drivers who just speed over the bumps regardless? They don't solve ANY problem. They just create problems, whether that means exacerbating medical conditions for those that have them, wrecking innocent drivers' suspension, or the council having less money to fix real problems because they wasted it on speed bumps. Councils up and down the land tout these wastes of money as "traffic calming measures", yet they only serve to make traffic less calm and to look for ways around the bumps.
If anyone needed evidence that the MPs and decision makers know how awful they are, they need look no further than the London Olympics, when it was deemed fit to remove speed bumps from Charlton Park Lane, Greenwich, to allow dignitaries and athletes to be ferried to and from the events in comfort. After the Games were over, they were then reinstalled, at a total cost of at least £50,000 of taxpayers' money. So why should they get special treatment, but the rest of us have to put up with vehicular assault courses on a daily basis? It's ridiculous. There are ways to stop drivers speeding - this just isn't one of them. Let's put a stop to the mindless destruction of the quality of our roads.
