No one supports the idea of cancer. People don’t go around wearing t-shirts saying ‘Epileptic Shocks are Fun’. Yet, in the world of eating disorders, this is entirely different. Hundreds of websites are made every year that encourage boys, girls, men and women to starve their bodies, hurt their minds and destroy their lives. They post thousands of pictures of severely skinny bodies and share dangerous diet tips and their daily intake, which is normally below 500 calories. This creates a competitive impulse in thousands of people to be skinnier and better than everyone on the website. It’s like a virus; if you stick one person in a room full of people with swine flu, the healthy person won’t be healthy for much longer. Having a community of people who weigh less than them, throw up more than them, and are generally more dedicated to the illness than them is an incredibly unhealthy environment. It creates jealously and envy and role-models these incredibly influential people look buy into. These websites are still legal in Scotland. If this continues, more people are going to die from something that may be preventable. Sign this petition. Save someone’s life. Pro-Ana is not Pro-you.

I really thought this might just disappear into the void but seeing it pick up steam like this is honestly startling. It is strange and heavy to think about how many people actually get this pain because I spent so long feeling like I was the only one screaming at a wall.

Why would someone want to promote a disease not cure it?
