We are calling for a ban on all disposable water bottles sold on Santa Monica College campus.
Instead, we would like to see every SMC student and employee refilling their reusable water bottles at the numerous filling stations located around campus. For more information contact us at [email protected]

If you would like to see wasteful disposable bottles banned from campus please sign this petition.

It takes a plastic bottle 450+ years to decompose. Americans used about 50 billion plastic water bottles last year. However, the U.S.'s rate for un-recycled plastic is 77 percent, which means 38 billion water bottles – more than $1 billion worth of plastic – end up in the ocean, landfills, etc. Making bottles to meet America's demand for bottled water uses more than 17 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year. And that's not even including the oil used for transportation. In addition, most bottled water comes from drought-region areas. California is currently experiencing it's third-driest years. Companies such as Arrowhead, Crystal Geyser, Aquafina and Dasani are still selling water from California. Besides, 45 percent of bottle water is tap water with added minerals for flavor. Recycling is not enough anymore we have to start refusing single-use plastic bottles.

The administration at SMC is still ignoring our demands while they continue to profit from selling plastic trash on campus. I am tired of watching them pretend that recycling will fix a crisis they are actively fueling with their vending machines.

Water bottles serve a great purpose. Such as during a disaster. Otherwise they ARE the disaster.

I feel life people will take take too kindly to not being allowed to have their drinks on campus so I feel that educating everyone on the harms of plastic bottles will really make the difference in whether this passes or not.

Drinking out of mason jars is so great, because if you're at an event with leftovers, your water bottle can double as food storage. Also the make you look cooler.
