Ban HGVs during rush hours on all UK roads
As a regular road and motorway user, I, along with others, are tired of HGV vehicles blocking up the roads and motorways between rush hours, whilst the population is trying to get to work or home on time.
You may argue that the drivers are only doing their job, trying to get to work or home on time too, we all need to make a living, but do they deserve this respect from you whilst they have no respect for you, other road users or for the speed limits that are either set or vary? No, they don't give respect so they don't deserve it, therefore, they should be banned from driving on motorways between the hours of 6am-10am and 4pm-7pm.
The problems' begin on dual carriageways where they feel the need to overtake another HGV doing 50mph, at 51mph, creating a tailback and a higher likelihood of road rage from / between other road users.
They are too big to pull off at roundabouts without traffic signal assistance, delaying everyone behind them.
They get too close for comfort on smart motorways and completely ignore the advised speed limit, they block cars in between them, they are a constant pain to the safe driving public, they don't pay attention, the drivers think it is fine to watch films and text whilst driving, which results in crashes and killing of innocent people.
They crash into peoples houses, they crash into people cars, they ruin lives and businesses because of their time wasting, ignorance and the governments ignorance on allowing such dangerous vehicles drive on our roads.
The weight of them ruins our roads, we pay so much road tax because HGVs are too heavy for the roads which means they need repairing more often, if we banned them using the roads for a period of the day then our roads will last longer.
The motorways are under constant repair, adapting them to fit more lanes, for more vehicles, if we could ban HGVs for said periods of time, would we need to expand the motorways? Would we all experience the amount of delays that we do? Probably not.
The sheer size of the vehicles means they have more blind spots than a blind person, would you let a blind person drive? No, you wouldn't because they can't see what they are doing which makes them a hazard to other road users, which is exactly the same as a HGV and its driver. Why do we allow vehicles to drive blindly on our roads, at all, but mostly at the times when the roads are at their busiest, with a high percentage of the British public trying to get to work?
If it was up to me they would have their own roads, paid for by their companies, and be completely segregated from cars, motorbikes, cyclists, pedestrians, etc. due to the risk they pose, or even better; ban them all together and find a better way of making deliveries. For now, a ban on the times they can drive may be enough to start saving lives and the sanity of the rest of the road users.
