Ban Fracking in the Yukon
To the Yukon Legislative Assembly:
This petition of the undersigned shows:
THAT the proposed switch to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in Yukon:
1. Ties Yukon to the pursuit of fossil fuels which leads to hydraulic fracturing in Yukon and to pollution of water, land and air resources which threatens healthy ecosystems,
2. Delays the inevitable and critically-needed transition to renewable energy (wind, solar, hydro and others) by tying up significant monetary resources on more fossil fuel infrastructure,
3. Exacerbates climate change, which is on track to reach critical levels in the next two to three decades, by ignoring the significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by methane losses, and jeopardizes Yukon’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions,
4. Will not lead to long-term cost savings, because as demand shifts from oil to LNG the cost of LNG will rise as it has done in the past,
5. Will lead to fracking natural gas in Yukon as outside LNG prices rise; and
6. Will lead to more pollution from local fracking which will undermine public social health and safety; tourism; fishing; hunting; the Yukon wilderness brand and lifestyle; and, built infrastructure such as highways.
THEREFORE, the undersigned ask the Legislative Assembly to urge the Government of Yukon to ban Hydraulic Fracturing in Yukon Territory and LNG use by Yukon’s utilities for electricity generation or for distribution.
