Dear Sir,

We are addressing you and the federal authorities involved in the public health problem posed by asbestos use in México.

The international scientific community has demonstrated that asbestos is carcinogenic in humans and produces pleural mesothelioma (median survival rate of 6 months after diagnosis), lung, larynx and ovary cancer, asbestosis, peritoneal and pericardial mesothelioma.

This has been expressed by IARC, WHO, OIT, ACGIH, ATSDR, AISS, the U.S. National Toxicology Program, National Cancer Institute, OSHA, UN, IPCS, UN Environment Program (UNEP), OMC and the World Trade Organization.

Since 2006, the World Health Organization stated that:

a) There is no safe level of exposure to any type of asbestos

b) There is an epidemic of asbestos-related diseases that claims more than 140,000 lives worldwide every year

c) 25 million people have been exposed to asbestos

Therefore, WHO has urged member countries of the United Nations (including Mexico), to eliminate the use of asbestos.

Following the scientific findings and recommendations of WHO, ILO and ISSA, countries such as Algeria, Argentina, Chile, Honduras, Uruguay, South Korea, Kuwait, Latvia, Luxembourg, Oman, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Serbia , Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom, Croatia, Germany, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brunei, Bulgaria, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Gabon, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mozambique, the Netherlands, New Caledonia, and Norway have banned the use of any type of asbestos.* 1

In Mexico, the importation of asbestos, and the manufacture of products with asbestos of asbestos continues, impacting the health of workers and their families, and of those populations that have been exposed occupational and environmentally.

Researchers at IMSS, INER and other prestigious institutions have been studying this issue for 13 years, and have alerted the authorities about it. About 1500 deaths are estimated annually in Mexico by exposure to asbestos (500 of them by pleural mesothelioma and 1000 by lung cancer).

Safe substitutes for all asbestos products already exist. Therefore, companies and sources of employment will not be affected by replacing asbestos for other materials. There is no longer justification for continued use at the expense of the lives of thousands of Mexicans.

Based on the foregoing, AyudaMEsotelioma, A.C., and all the signees of this letter, make a call to the President of Mexico and to the authorities of the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, Secretaría de Trabajo y Previsión Social, Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público, Secretaría de Economía, Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores, y Federal Government institutions, to ensure compliance with the constitutional duty stated in the Constitution to guarantee the right to health Mexicans and a healthy environment through the prohibition of asbestos in Mexico.

Failure to do so is to ignore the recommendations of the world health authorities. Moreover, it is a fundamental lack of respect for human life.

Estimado Señor:

Nos dirigimos a usted y a las autoridades federales involucradas en el problema de salud pública que representa el uso del asbesto en México.

La comunidad científica internacional ha demostrado que el asbesto (o amianto) es una fibra cancerígena en humanos y produce mesotelioma pleural (con una sobrevida de 6 meses), cáncer pulmonar, de laringe y ovario, asbestosis, y mesotelioma peritoneal y pericardiaco.

Así lo han expresado la IARC, OMS, OIT, ACGIH, ATSDR, AISS, National Toxiology Program, National Cancer Institute, OSHA, UN, IPCS, UN Environment Programme (UNEP), OMC y World Trade Organization.

Desde el 2006 la OMS declarado que:

a) No hay nivel seguro de exposición a ningún tipo de asbestos.

b) Hay una epidemia que cobra más de 140,000 muertes al año a nivel mundial por enfermedades relacionadas con el asbesto

c) 25 millones de personas se han expuestos al amianto

Por lo anterior, la OMS ha conminado a que los países miembros de la Organización de Naciones Unidas (México incluido), eliminen el uso de asbestos.

Siguiendo los hallazgos científicos y las recomendaciones de la OMS, OIT, y AISS, países como Algeria, Argentina, Chile, Honduras, Uruguay, Korea del Sur, Kuwait, Latvia, Luxemburgo, Oman, Polonia, Qatar, Rumania, Arabia Saudita, Serbia, Slovenia, Sudáfrica, España, Suiza, Suecia, Turquía, Reino Unido, Croacia, Alemania, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Bélgica, Brunei, Bulgaria, Dinamarca, egipto, Estonia, Finlandia, Francia, Gabon, Islandia, Irlanda, Israel, Italia, Japón, Mozambique, los Países Bajos, Nueva Caledonia, y Noruega[1] han prohibido el uso de cualquier tipo de asbestos

México importó más de 500,000 toneladas de asbestos entre 1960 y 2010. La manufactura de productos que lo contienen, continúa, impactando la salud de los trabajadores y sus familias, y a poblaciones que se han expuesto ocupacional y ambientalmente.

Este tema ha sido investigado y seguido en México desde hace 13 años por investigadores del IMSS, INER y otras prestigiosas instituciones, que han alertado a las autoridades del problema. Se estiman anualmente en México cerca de 1500 muertes por la exposición al asbesto (500 de mesotelioma pleural y 1000 de cáncer pulmonar).

Actualmente ya existen sustitutos seguros del asbesto para todos los productos que se elaboraron con esta fibra. Por lo tanto, las empresas y las fuentes de empleo no se verán afectadas. No hay ya justificación para continuar su uso a costa de la vida de miles de mexicanos.

Por todo lo anterior, Ayuda Mesotelioma, A.C., y los firmantes, hacen una llamado al Presidente de la República Mexicana y a las autoridades de la Secretaría de Salud, en especial a la Cofepris, a la Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, a la Secretaría de Trabajo y Previsión Social, la Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público y la Secretaría de Economía, a la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores, y las instituciones del Gobierno Federal, para que se cumpla con el deber constitucional consignado en la Constitución de garantizar el derecho a la salud de los mexicanos y un medio ambiente sano a través de la prohibición del asbesto en México.

No hacerlo, es ignorar las recomendaciones de las autoridades mundiales en cuestión salud y sanidad. Más aún, es carecer de un respeto fundamental por la vida humana.
