Baltimore City should open pools for swimming.

Pool exercise is an important way to maintain a healthy lifestyle and a healthy immune system. Aquatic exercise can improve mental activity and metabolic health. Swimming also has an advantage over other exercise because of the presence of chlorine.

“There is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas or water play areas," according to the CDC's website. "Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water.”

This is an activity conducted in a medium - chlorinated water - which eliminates the virus.

Baltimore has a rich history of swimming because of its many rivers, lakes, and seaside resorts. Learning to swim is an important life skill. As the State of Maryland has opened pools at now 50% capacity this week, we believe Baltimore City should follow suit considering the City needs to encourage this life skill and exercise.
