Petition to Stop Common Core in Diocese of Baltimore Schools

To: Archbishop William Lori and Diocesan Leaders

We, the undersigned, ask Archbishop Lori and all of the Diocesan school leaders of the Diocese of Baltimore to stand firmly in opposition to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and to disassociate with the Common Core Catholic Identity Initiative (CCCII) that is promoted and supported by the National Catholic Education Association. We believe that the Common Core State Standards represent lower academic standards for our children and have paved the way for controversial teaching material. We ask that all Diocesan leaders review in detail the material being promoted by CCCII for the implementation of Common Core, as it distorts the Church'steachings. We ask that you set a strong example for other Dioceses across the country by rescinding the Diocesan approval of and implementation of the Common Core standards and reject any current use or future use of CCCII resources, training, and guidance for Diocesan educators. We also ask that Diocesan school leaders promise not to collect or track data on our children or our families in conjunction with or related to the Common Core State Standards or any other state or federally run data tracking system, abide by the prior FERPA laws, and protect the privacy of ourchildren’spersonal information. We strongly believe that this is a significant opportunity for Catholic schools to distinguish themselves from a national monolithic school system, and to garner renewed support from communities across the country. Parents will seek alternative and traditional schools for their children, and in turn, for future generations to come. The Diocese of Baltimorecould be a true leader by rejecting Common Core and thereby leading through true evangelization.

Updates

February 2, 2014

Archbishop Lori and his team continue to ignore our concerns while they push this curriculum into our classrooms. We are still fighting to get a real answer because the silence from the Archdiocese is a deliberate attempt to keep parents in the dark. Keep this circulating so they cannot pretend they have our permission to track our children or distort their education.

February 2, 2014

Archbishop Lori can no longer pretend this is just a fringe concern. We have built an undeniable swell of opposition that makes it clear parents are finished with the Diocese playing games with our children's education.

In part we choose a Catholic school for our children to minimize the impact of government in the classroom. Common Core was not written or tested by expert educators. Let our teachers teach and let parents be involved in their childs education! My goodness the first school was started by a nun in Maryland, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton! The government is already taking more of our liberties and freedoms away from us, not they want to further take away our child's eductation becuause they know best. NO THEY DON'T!!! I know best, my childrent's teacher knows best, not some government official!

The money that will be received from the federal government for implimenting the common core curriculum is NOT worth the selling off of our Catholic values. core

our Catholic education system does not NEED to accept state funds, but needs to rely on Divine Providence.

The education of our children needs to be kept and encouraged to higher standards not lowering the standards. Our children are the future of our nation.

We would do well to rely on Divine Providence and not on any Government grants.

Our Catholic schools need to work toward more Catholic teaching, and not accept not common core and governemt control.
