Bars Against Drunk Driving
The truth is- bars are not doing enough to combat the issue of drunk driving. The “designated driver” is a wonderful idea in theory, but what incentives do bars give to such people? The answer is, not enough. Bars Against Drunk Driving is my initiative to urge bars to “raise the bar” on promoting the idea of the designated driver. In the past couple years I have lost 4 people to drunk driving accidents. It’s time to stop this cycle. I personally do not drink and am therefore the designated driver almost every time I go out to bars with my friends. I can’t even recount the number of times I have shown up to a bar and been asked to pay a cover charge even after I made it known that I would not be drinking ANY alcoholic beverages that night and that I was the DD. Bars should not charge a cover fee to any people who take this admirable role of staying sober for the safety of themselves and their friends. In addition, I believe these people should be offered non-alcoholic beverages FREE of charge for that night. Whether they are marked with a wristband, or a hand marking is up to the individual bars. I propose, people who are marked will not be served alcoholic beverages and if they are seen with alcohol it is up to the bars to fine/charge them. The number of alcohol related driving accidents is rapidly on the rise, and it’s time that we put a stop to it.
