Have you ever applied for a job and wondered if your bad credit would affect the outcome? Pre-employment credit checks aren't that uncommon these days. "A company's choice to ignore unemployed applicants who clearly are unable to pay their bills on time are ignoring the effect of the recession on millions of highly-qualified workers and could prolong the unemployment crisis." Judy Conti, federal advocacy coordinator for the National Employment Law Project. In the current economy, where millions of people have lost their jobs through absolutely no fault of their own, it is beyond unconscionable that any employer would not consider workers with poor credit for current job openings. These employers are being short-sighted in their search for the best qualified workers and are clearly not good corporate citizens of the communities in which they work. Increasingly, politicians and policy makers are trying to blame the unemployed as being irresponsible, and to see this shameful propaganda trickle down to hiring decisions is truly sad and despicable. Is it discrimination? Yes. But US law only prohibits discrimination for race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disabilities and age. People with bad credit are not a protected group. This is another opportunity for corporations to bypass the middle-class and use their biases to skip over certain groups. Every person with bad credit is not a thief; embezzler; has bad character; is irresponsible or will sell trade secrets! Give 'em a job so that they can gradually rebuild their credit. (monitor this after they've been hired) Especially now since everyone has been impacted by the poor economic downturn!! This is an unfair practice and something needs to be done about it! .
