To North Bay City Council: Chickens have existed in cities since the dawn of time, and they still exist all over the world. Benefits to raising hens in the City of North Bay include: 1. Fresh, healthy, delicious eggs, free of pesticides and antibiotics. 2. Chickens eat table scraps and weeds, reducing municipal solid waste. 3. Chickens provide increased food security for low-income families. 4. Chickens produce a rich fertilizer by-product, high in nitrogen, eliminating the need for petrochemical fertilizers. 5. Chickens reduce the impact of petrochemical fuel emissions from vehicles that transport eggs from commercial farms to grocery stores. 6. Chicken keeping is educational, teaching children where our food comes from and demonstrating responsible pet ownership. 7. Chickens make great pets and are people-friendly. Their behaviour is interesting and entertaining. 8. Chickens eat bugs, reducing our backyard pest population. We, the undersigned, citizens of the City of North Bay, urge the North Bay City Council to update the North Bay Municipal Code in order to permit the responsible keeping of backyard chickens.
