We would like to propose a change to the current ordinance held by Tazewell County regarding the keeping of chickens in residential areas. More and more people are realizing the benefits of keeping backyard chickens. The current ordinance does not make it possible for many residents of Tazewell County to keep the birds. The goals for the new ordinance would be to allow people to keep a limited number of chickens (hens only, no roosters). The birds would be required to be contained in an enclosure that is kept up by the owner. A permit would be required and coops would be subject to inspection to ensure a clean and safe environment for all.
