The Town ordinance should be changed to allow a small number of backyard hens for the following reasons:
-- Chickens produce a rich fertilizer by-product, high in nitrogen, eliminating the need for petrochemical fertilizers.
-- Chickens eat bugs, including ticks, reducing our backyard pest population, and allowing for reduced use of pesticides.
-- Backyard hens provide an educational opportunity to teach children where our food comes from and demonstrate responsible pet ownership.
-- Fresh, naturally raised eggs have an improved nutrient profile compared to conventional eggs.
-- Chickens eat table scraps, reducing municipal solid waste.
-- A properly cleaned and maintained chicken coop poses no sanitation risks.
By amending the Town ordinance to allow residents to keep hens in residential zones, the residents of Chickahominy Haven will encourage stewardship of the environment and food production on a household scale
I am truly stunned by the momentum this has gained lately and I never thought so many neighbors would care about backyard hens. This progress belongs entirely to the people who took the time to spread the word. Thank you for showing me that our community really values this change.

Its 2017 people. Chickens are not a nuisance. Stop trying to control what we do on our own property.

Ridiculous that we have to ask for permission to have a few quiet hens in our own backyards. They are way less noisy than my neighbors dog!

Just let us have the chickens already. Seriously who cares if someone has 3 hens in their yard.

The amount of ticks in this area is insane. Chickens would actually help keep them down naturally. Better than spraying chemicals everywhere.

I really want fresh eggs for my kids. My garden would love the compost too.
