With the proposed closure of Robert Morris Elementary by the Philadelphia School District, I support the proposal by the Bache-Martin Home and School Association (HSA), Bache-Martin Elementary School, and the Center City Schools Coalition to expand the current catchment for Bache-Martin to include the entire Fairmount neighborhood, creating a true“neighborhood” school. This expansion wouldaffect all households living south of Girard Avenue down to Pennsylvania Avenue.

There are several benefits for the students:

Safety – children would not have to cross a major road (Girard Avenue) to walk to school
Distance – for most of the proposed area to be added, Bache-Martin is located closer to these families than W.D. Kelley and the new Vaux Elementary
Adding more seats at a high performing school – Bache-Martin has an SPI of 6; W.D. Kelley is a 10, and the new Vaux Elementary (Meade and Reynolds) would be a 9. This would give students from Robert Morris (SPI 8) the opportunity to attend a higher performing school.
