I direct the Young Writers Workshop at SIU Carbondale, an annual residential teen writers workshop for students age 15 to 18. I'm also a former AWP Board Member and the 2012 recipient of the George Garrett Award for Community Service in Literature. I teach at Southern Illinois University Carbondale

I have only been a member for two years and have only attended two conferences, but as a high school creative writing teacher, a high school librarian, and a poet, anything we can do to support teachers to provide arts instructions in schools is vital. As a society, we underestimate the value of young voices and creative writing programs are one way to encoruage and nurture young writers. I strongly believe how we imagine leads to how we create a better a world. Creative writing is key for young people to have the freedom to imagine so that we can become better than what we are now, as individuals and communities.
I have attended two of the last three AWP conferences, but attended seven of the last eight and my school is an institutional member. Please take these factors into consideration in weighing my signature.

Suzanne, I'm not not sure what you mean when you say "control our curriculum." If you look at the petition, the aim of the caucus would be to acknowledge how different and unique each school (and student is). There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to teaching, and this is especially true when it comes to arts education. If you'd like to talk more about this, drop me a line at [email protected].

Having graduated from a high school of the arts, I know how vibrant school-level creative writing instruction can be, and would welcome seeing more attention paid to it at AWP.
