AVID, which stands for Advanced Via Individual Determination is a college- readiness program designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four year colleges. It aims to take students whose grades are in the B, C, and even D range and give them more advanced curriculum and with the team support these students rise to the challenge”. By implementing this program into high schools nationwide, we would see less high school drop out rates, more students entering into four year colleges, and ultimately, more money being returned into our economy “Today, AVID has been adopted by nearly 4,500 schools in 47 states, and serves approximately 400,000 students, grades 4-12”. Where we are not seeing enough of these programs is in areas where school graduation rates are less than 50% such as New York and Baltimore. The US Federal government should implement the AVID program nationwide, in order to solve problems associated with minority and low-income student drop out rates and lack of representation in higher education.
