I just hung up the phone and the university actually agreed to adjust the fees for this term because honestly they finally heard us. I am in total shock right now but so incredibly grateful to everyone who stuck with me while we pushed for this because we really did …

Subject: Fee reduction for Fall 2020 semester

Respected Sir/Ma'am

Taking note of the current pandemic situation, we, the students of Ajman University, appreciate the continuous support by the university and show consent on the decision of the university's 'HyFlex learning model' during the Fall 2020 semester for the safety of its students. However, we feel that it is unjustified that Ajman University is following its regular fee structure for the Fall 2020 semester.

Under HyFlex learning, all theoretical courses are going to taught completely online. This is not a benefit for students. Online learning has many negatives, the main one being the quality of education. The quality of education that students receive on campus is far superior than the quality of educations than the quality of education that students receive online. It is important to address that the online learning platform is not as perfect as in campus education, but just an alternate in this situation. Students have to put in more effort in online learning as the level of teaching is not at par with in campus teaching and they need more practice to understand concepts, not to mention the added mental strain and pressure of studying from home.

Also, keeping the current situation in mind, the government has created policies which give employers a choice to reduce the salaries of their employees. Many of the students and their families have been affected by this decision and cannot afford to pay the fees that they used to pay earlier. This is an added pressure for students. Many students are planning to take a break from their studies for the next semester as they have lost their income streams during this pandemic. While we appreciate that the university’s decision to sanitize the university and take all necessary precautionary measures, but we believe that the financial implications of these decisions must not be passed on to the students and their parents.

For the students who will be registering in theoretical courses, they are neither going to use the premises, utilities, facilities nor any extra circular activities which are closed for the semester thus reducing the university's costs. Students will be missing out on a variety of things with their classes being online. Some points to be mentioned are: gym facilities, sports field facilities, swimming pool facilities, library facilities, WiFi facilities, classroom facilities, instructor office hours facilities, on campus computers facilities, student hub facility, extra curricular activities, the variable quality of online education, no access to campus facilities etc. We also believe that as their will be around 30% of the students on campus at any time (for lab, studio, or any other relevant classes), the university will need to cater to the needs of just 30% of the students, which will reduce the infrastructure costs for the university as well.

We also believe that relief package announced by Ajman University is unreasonable, and should not be subjected to just a handful of families, as all families across the board are effected. We have also noticed that the honors discount criteria has been changed, and students with a GPA of 3.80-3.99 will now be receiving 15% discount instead of 20% which they used to receive before. In this situation, the university should be looking to ease the financial burden on its students rather than increase it.

In the last few months, businesses across UAE and the world have suffered, and the burden of this has been passed to their employees as well. Many families whose children are studying at Ajman University have also been affected by the pandemic- in the form of being laid off, sent on unpaid leave, or facing salary cuts up to 30%. Majority of the businesses are struggling and this has led to a commercial activity coming to a complete halt. These are severely difficult times for all of us.

Considering these prevailing conditions, many schools and universities in UAE are supporting the parents and have announced reductions in fees up to 50%.

Being a well known education provider in the UAE, we expect Ajman University to lead the way and therefore, we collectively appeal to Ajman University for a minimum 20% Fees Reduction for the theoretical courses for the Fall 2020 semester. We request Ajman University to decrease the fees of all theoretical courses by a minimum 20% as they will be taught completely online. We would also request the university to waive off the AED 400 student services charge that students pay every semester as they will not be utilizing the facilities these semester. As for those parents that have already paid, we request their payments to be adjusted against the next upcoming semester.

These are challenging times for all of us, and we hope Ajman University will play its part.

Your support shall be highly appreciated,

Students of Ajman University

I was just reading through the messages some of you sent about the extra hours spent teaching yourselves at home and it really hits home how much weight is on everyone right now. It feels like the administration is just hoping we get tired of asking but I keep sorting through these emails and realize we are definitely not going to just let this slide until there is some kind of real answer.

I can see the count ticking up which is honestly wild since I just started this on a whim but we are almost at a hundred marks. If everyone could just ping a few classmates or maybe even drop a link in a group chat we could actually get the management to look at this thing instead of just ignoring the inbox.

The amount of fees we’re paying during this pandemic is absurd, looking at how the quality of education has decreased the fees should be adjusted accordingly

Since the university isn't organizing any events and workshops, which is also a reduction in their expenses along with other mentioned reasons, they should cut down on high fees as the quality of education and university life should match high fees payments
