This Petition is to bring attention and form an open dialogue with Parents and Residents over issues pertaining to Sayles School. Especially the lack of funding over many years and the continue request by the Board of Finance and Town Officials to absolve the increases in costs though educational cuts. The school is our core and a leading asset of the town. The residents of Sprague needs to voice their concerns and vision of Sayles School in regards to the educational funding of the school. The quality of education we provide our children is the responsibility of every parent and resident of town. The success of the Sprague School District is what will help make The Town of Sprague thrive or fail.

Updates

May 14, 2019

The feedback coming from neighbors lately highlights a shared concern about the future of our local school. We are working to ensure that town officials recognize that our educational budget reflects our priorities as a community.

Reaching this current level of support demonstrates how deeply our community cares about the future of Sayles School. It is heartening to see so many neighbors recognize that the quality of education we provide directly shapes the trajectory of our town.

It is sad to hear the stories of children not getting the attention that they need to get a proper education. Something needs to be done about the funding for teachers, I can only imagine how stressed the teachers must be as well as the students.

When we purchased our house in Sprague in 2014, it was due to the fact that it had a good school and a quiet rural atmosphere, whiles not being to far from amenities. About that time is when the cuts started to get out of control. We lost foreign language, technical education, a library, after school sports, the school we researched before we moved in is a fraction of what it was only a few short years ago. If i was in the same situation again, odds are we would have chosen once of the other towns we looked at. What a shame

We will be sending our kids to St. Joseph’s in part because Sayles is such a mess. My wife went to Sayles when she was a girl and is embarrassed by what it has become.

I am deeply saddened by our school system. I subbed at sayles years ago and this is not the same school. When we bought our house here and I knew my kids were going to go to the school, I was excited and happy for them to be in a small town school preschool thru 8th and offer so many things to them. I don't understand how we can take so much from our future Generations. How are we supposed to adequately give them the proper education that will make them successful in their school as well as in adulthood and the career path that they choose. We as taxpayers can drive 10 minutes down the road to an area school which will offer them so many more things. I don't understand how one town can offer so much and this town can offer so little. Our mill rate is extremely high in comparison with Norwich. I have to say the things that they can offer Norwich students is more than sayles can offer our students. Norwich offers technology in the classrooms sayles does not just to give an example. Shame on you, town of Sprague, let's put a better plan in place, one that puts our children's Education first. We want our children to grow up and lead a productive successful life in order to do that they need a successful education that opens the doors to many different paths that they can choose from.

We transferred our children to St. Joseph's last September, mainly do to the lost of educational services, combine 3rd grade, and continuing lack of funding. We are very happy with the education our children are receiving at St. Joseph's from the smaller classes, personal attention, curriculum, and parent involvement. I have been involved since April 2016 to help improve Sayles School. Every child deserves to have a quality education. To bring back the educational services our children have lost Parents and Residents must show the town officials how we want our taxes to be spent. Ask lots of question like 1) Why we have no cash reserves 2) Why doesn't the town have a plan for funding the school 3) What is the plan to increase revenue and the time line 4) Where is the investigation report on the 17-18 school overage. REMINDER BOARD OF FINANCE MEETING THURSDAY MAY 16, 2019 7:00 P.M. TOWN HALL 2ND FLOOR.
