We, the undersigned, as United States citizens believe that atheists we are being denied basic civil rights as American citizens. In accordance with federal laws we are demanding that proper action is taken to correct these injustices. The treaty of Tripoli states that the United States is in no way founded on or formed as a religious nation. This is a legally binding document! As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Musselmen; and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between ect.... The following are only a few examples of civil rights that are denied to atheists. 1.) The first bill of right is: CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW RESPECTING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF RELIGION, Many of the founding fathers are atheist including Lincoln, Adams, and Jefferson. This is why the separation of church and state is included in our laws. 2.) The government funds the boy scouts with federal land and monetary funding they do not allow atheist children to join (which is illegal). 3.) In god we trust was added to our money in 1966. 4.) Under god was added to the pledge of allegiance in 1954. 5.) The court can order people to attend and complete alcoholics anonymous, you must say that there is a god in 6 of the 12 steps in this type of rehabilitation program, and many similar programs. 6.) It is illegal for an atheist to hold a civil office in 6 states. Arkansas Maryland North Carolina Pennsylvania South Carolina Tennessee Texas They all have different clauses in their respective constitutions which say that people who don't believe in God (or, alternatively, A Supreme Being) can't hold public offices. 7.) Blatant prejudice toward atheists by political leaders without reprimand. This is from the mouth of George h bush in 1987 Sherman: What will you do to win the votes of the Americans who are atheists Bush: I guess I'm pretty weak in the atheist community. Faith in God is important to me. Sherman: Surely you recognize the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are atheists Bush: No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God. Sherman (somewhat taken aback): Do you support as a sound constitutional principle the separation of state and church Bush: Yes, I support the separation of church and state. I'm just not very high on atheists. And 1988 Sherman: American Atheists filed the Pledge of Allegiance lawsuit yesterday. Does the Bush campaign have an official response to this filing Murnane: It's bullshit. Sherman: What is bullshit Murnane: Everything that American Atheists does, Rob, is bullshit. Sherman: Thank you for telling me what the official position of the Bush campaign is on this issue. Murnane: You're welcome These are just a few of the many injustices that we as atheists face on a daily basis. If these basic civil rights were so blatantly denied to any other minority with such prejudice simply pointing them out would get the problems taken care of. As over 16 percent of the American population I believe that we have right to be treated as normal American citizens. If you agree with me please sign the petition by adding your name below.
