ASU: Make Eating Disorder Awareness a Priority

It's obvious that college students are at a very high risk for mental illness. Eating disorders are the most deadly mental illness, and they are a part of the culture at ASU.
Here's the problem:
ASU isranked as having the "hottest girls" of any school. The hot weather means students wear nearly nothing to class. A growing emphasis on fitness at ASU has turned into an obsession with working out. Simply put: ASU students are held to a standard of attractiveness over everything else. Students are relentlessly subjugated to judgement based on appearance.
And ASU isn't doing enough about it.
Other universities have taken mass initiatives to break down the stigma of eating disorders and provide resources for those that may be suffering from an eating or feeding disorder.
This is a call to action:
1. Make mental health and eating disorder information a mandatory part of the curriculum in all ASU101 classes.
2. Require Greek Life to hold semesterly meetings to discuss awareness, resources, and prevention, as this is a high-risk population.
3. Equip athletic coaches with training to screen for eating disorders in student athletes and provide specialized resources to this high-risk population.
4. Staff a full-time psychologist and nutritionist specializing in eating disorders, and advertise their services on campus.
5. Train community assistants and peer mentors in recognizing eating disorders and provide them with information and resources so that they can point their residents in the right direction to get help.
ASU should take a stand in the fight to treat and prevent eating disorders, as other universities are doing.
