This proposed change is not in keeping with research about quality writing instruction, nor is it in keeping with a productive vision for higher education generally. I hope ASU will reconsider.

As a writing instructor at a large state university, I see ASU's actions as a herald of worse things to come. We need to stop the practice of undervaluing college instructors' work, time, and scholarship.

Dr. Lussier, Please respect the hard work and talent you have no doubt cultivated. While I understand you have pressures from higher administrators, squeezing more work out of adjuncts will hurt the quality of instruction at ASU and ultimately, its reputation as a leading research university. Is this the new American University for the 21st century as Michael Crow has consistently stated? Seems more like a feudal nightmare ... maybe Crow is dyslexic building a university for the 12th century.

I taught a 5/5 load at a major university for three semesters, in an effort to pay off extra bills. NONE of them were Writing Courses--all were literature or STS surveys. And, still, I had no time and energy left. After three semesters, I was burned out on the 5/5 load--the extra money wasn't worth it--and I went back to a 4/4 load. ASU's request here is insane.

It's unconscionable what the English department is asking these instructors to bear. Their students will suffer--students who will make up the next generation of leaders in Arizona. ASU is making some very questionable decisions lately, and this is the latest decision that damages its reputation nationwide.

The increased workload of this change is appalling, and the removal of professional development and service from the responsibilities of the instructors will only serve to isolate NTT faculty even more from the rest of the university. This decision negatively impacts student learning, faculty morale, and the public image of ASU.
