PLEASE NOTE: You are not required to make a donation to iPetitions in order for your signature to be recorded. --- Harris County Commissioners Court will soon be deciding the future of the Astrodome. A wide majority of Houstonians have expressed their support for saving the world\'s first enclosed, climate-controlled stadium. The Houston Texans and Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo have publicly announced they support preserving the Dome, but oppose the current redevelopment plan. The Astrodome is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and any privately funded project will include federal preservation tax credits, so the Texas Historical Commission (THC) and National Park Service (NPS) will be play integral roles in the planning process. THC has stated that any proposal must preserve the building\'s historic integrity by retaining the Dome\'s interior volume and respecting the original baseball field configuration. The stadium\'s exterior should also be restored to its 1965 appearance. By signing this petition, you state that you support efforts to preserve the Astrodome as an important part of Houston\'s, and America\'s, history. This petition will be delivered to Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and members of the Harris County Commissioners Court; Robert McNair, founder, chairman and CEO of the Houston Texans; Paul Somerville, chairman of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo; Janis Schmees, executive director of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority; and Willie Loston, executive director of the Harris County Sports & Convention Corp. Remember, your tax dollars built and maintain the Astrodome. You should have a say in the stadium\'s future. Remind our public officials that we own the Dome. GHPA will not use the information you submit in this petition to contact you and will not share your information with any other party or agency. Remember, you need not make a donation to iPetitions in order for your signature to be recorded.

We hit one thousand signatures today. It has been a long road fighting to keep the Dome standing and my eyes are heavy but I am not stopping now.

The grind to reach one thousand signatures feels heavier than I expected but the history of the Astrodome deserves this fight. Please help push us over this current threshold so we have the leverage we need when we finally sit down with the commission.

Reaching our first hundred names is proving to be a difficult climb. I am drained by the constant push but we must get this in front of the Commissioners before they decide the fate of our stadium. Please help us cross this threshold so we can show them the strength of our resolve.

I am not even a sports fan but I am a native Houstonian, circa 1948. I remember fondly and proudly when the very first domed stadium came up out of the ground in the middle of a pasture. The Astrodome put Houston on the World map. People still travel here to see "The Eight Wonder of the World". Not to see Reliant Stadium as it is "just another stadium" (as the "Blow it up" crowd refers to the Dome. I am not criticizing Reliant Stadium but making a point of importance. I am very much interested in doing what I can to help preserve the Astrodome.

My hope is that petitions like this will spur preservationist groups such as the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance and others as well as preservation-minded Houstonians toward a wider-inclusiveness of all Houstonians and that it represents a clear clarion call across Houston that the historic preservation of our cultural icons is everyone's business and concern, not just those few who more vocally advocate for it. I hope this is a first step in a new awareness and effort to support that awareness.

Robert Hammond is one of the 2 men responsible for saving and turning the High Line in NYC into a park and tourist attraction. It is projected to earn the city much more in property tax revenue than originally thought. Please use this and other inspiring and successful projects to refurbish the Astrodome.
