American Sign Language at James Madison University
James Madison University's National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association, ASL Club, and ( ...) strongly support and urge the expansion and inclusion of American Sign Language (ASL) at the university. Despite longstanding efforts to increase ASL courses and include them as a foreign language requirement, JMU has failed to adopt these recommendations.
Currently, JMU only offers CSD 420 Introduction to Sign Langauge under the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department. CSD 421 Sign language 2, will not be offered in the Spring 2022 semester. Such a reduction and limitation of ASL course offerings at JMU is counterproductive to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
Please support us by signing this petition and asking James Madison University to:
- Increase the sections of CSD 420 and 421
- Expand the continuum of ASL courses offered in order to offer ASL as a foreign language requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree at JMU.
- Engage in inclusive hiring practices with heavy consideration of those from the Deaf Community for faculty and staff positions.
Thank you for your support!
