Ask Congressional Hungarian-American Caucus to Stand Up for Hungarian Democracy
We, Hungarian Americans and Americans of all backgrounds ask Representative Harris (MD-1), Representative Kaptur (OH-9), Representative Joyce (OH-14), Representative Diaz-Balart (FL-25), Representative Maloney (NY-12), Representative Ryan (OH-13), and Representative Waxman (CA-33) to stand up for democracy and the rule of law in Hungary. We thank all members of the Hungarian-American Caucus for their commitment to strengthening the relationship between the American people and the citizens of Hungary. In the spirit of this friendship, we ask members of the Caucus to speak out regarding the hundreds of laws adopted over the past few years which threaten the independence of the judiciary, media freedom, freedom of religion, the rule of law, and basic civil liberties in Hungary. Despite criticism from institutions ranging from the US Helsinki Commission to the European Union and Amnesty International, the Fidesz-led government is continuing to introduce new laws which harm the very fabric of Hungarian democracy. As friends of the Hungarian people, we cannot remain silent. As our representatives, we ask you to join us in calling on the Hungarian government to respect the basic principles of democracy, civil rights, and the rule of law.
