As a white individual who grew up in a military family and lived in several different states having experienced a wide range of diversity, I have the vantage point to see that Ashland has a lot of work to do. My family settled here permanently 28 years ago having moved from Chicago. I understood that Ashland was a predominantly white town, but until recently never realized just how much racism exists in the community. The current issues of civil unrest in the country have emboldened the racist individuals here to openly and proudly display their prejudices. I am appalled at Ashland City Council's approach, or lack thereof, in addressing this issue. The only action they wish to take is to pray on it and refuse to keep an open line of communication with the public? It's shameful. You may as well tell your community that you just don't care. Change doesn't happen without action and CLEARLY making it known that oppression will NOT be tolerated in our town. But the action of whitewashing the beautiful mural in our city lot speaks volumes of Miller. Explaining to the artist that works must be approved by the city in advance is understandable but the mural could have been left alone. It was a real "eff you" to the artist AND the community that wishes to see more diversity, especially in our current times. We are not stupid. We see that stunt for what it is. It was a way to tell the community that it's not a topic that will be dealt with. Period. End of story. It makes me angry and ashamed to live here. It makes me only want to speak louder for my black friends or anyone else that doesn't fit what Ashland deems the status quo. Seeing Republican celebration, dressing in Colonial attire with a Confederate flag-toting trollup on your arm is absolutely disgusting. The north won, the south lost. And how many years ago?! The Confederate flag is a stain on our country's history and is an enemy flag, not to be displayed for pride of a side that fought to keep

This town is more racist than they want to admit. If people would open their eyes and hearts this city could grow. It is no longer the 1900’s. Realize the problem and fix it. You have to start somewhere. Small things eventually turn into bigger things. Keeping your eyes closed doesn’t make the problems right in front of you go away.

My sons don't even want to live in Ashland. Upset we came back to be near family when pandemic hit. They liked Maple Heights better. Yet, we were told to go back rather than be asked, WHY don't they like their hometown? I presented ideas ranging from a minority outreach center or a liason, to City Schools hosting parent meetings for diverse students concerns and negative experiences with EVERYONE instead of segregating us and our children for small group sessions. We know the problems, it's everyone else who needs intervention! They bought into the war on drugs but no war on racism? Myself and now a newhire (also with biracial kids) can be harassed by racists at work with no reprisal for them. Law enforcement said due to no hate speech laws, I need 3 police reports with evidence of harassment before they can intervene, and we aren't allowed to ban them from the store. Why is it so hard to say- we don't agree or understand, but it's our job to help ALL those lives we say matter, so let's get to work. Education is necessary for prevention, can we at least start with that? #ProtectAndServe

I’m appalled at our elected leaders’ behavior. A lack of separation of church and state, blind to and uncaring of systemic racism in our community, and an unwillingness to listen to their constituents in a public forum (you can call or email us but don’t speak to us at a city council meeting). Their white male privilege has been on full display!
