In May of 2011, there was a new requirement added for graduation. All MBA students are required to take a cumulative exam that can cover anything in any of the core courses. Since the requirement was not in place when many of us started our programs this is not a requirement that should apply to this graduating class. Not only were we not notified of the potential of this requirement, once it became official we did not and still have not received proper notice.

I like many students did not retain my textbooks so there is no way to properly prepare for this exam without repurchasing all of the required text. Advisors have been instructed to tell us that there is no need to study for the exam, but it is usually a good idea to prepare for any exam that impacts 20% of your grade. This may not be the sole reason to fail a class, but it does tip the scales if you are on the border of two letter grades. Additionally, if you have a high G.P.A. like many of us may, this can lower your grade point average significantly. If you have a 4.0 and you get a B which means you received 100% of all other available points your GPA lowers a whole tenth of a point. The means you graduate with a 3.9 if you get C even a high C you will go from a 4.0 to a 3.82. If you’re GPA is already in the 3.0 range this can mean graduating with a GPA in the 2s.

The goal of this petition is to show the administration at Ashford University that we the students care about this situation and we want to see a change. We would like exemption from the exam. They should start the requirement with those just entering the program, not those finishing the program.
