Currently full-time and part-time undergraduates from both the UK or the EU who commenced studying at The Anglia Ruskin University in 2012/13 are set to receive £100 a year to subsidize the cost of learning materials from 'John Smith's Campus Book Shop'. However it has recently been confirmed that students joining a course in 2014 will now receive £400 each year.
IF YOU WERE A STUDENT AND JOINED IN 2011 YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN PAYING A MAXIMUM OF £3,375 PER YEAR IN TUITION FEE'S AND THE UNIVERSITY OFFERED YOU £500 PER YEAR AS PART OF THE 'BOOKS PLUS SCHEME' ... 1ST/2ND YEAR STUDENTS NOW PAY £8300 AND RECEIVE £100.
Tuition fee's for students beginning 2014/15 have risen from £8,300 to £9,000 on average which is perhaps a possible justification for the extra 'Books Allowance'. However this is unquestionably unfair since tuition fee's are paid in regular installments to the Anglia Ruskin University via 'Student Finance England', and generally students pay their fees back once in a full time occupation earning over £21,000 per annum - Put simply, the 'Books Plus Allowance' shares no relation to 'Tuition Fee' costs.
The Library can only accommodate so many books, since some publications and other resources on the prescribed reading lists taken from a variety of degree/foundation courses can cost over £35 each and then with, for example, Music students having to purchase a wide variety of vocal scores, Drama/English/Psychology students requiring lengthy anthology's, Art Students requiring a good supply of materials and stationary etc ON TOP OF THEIR READING LIST EACH SEMESTER - £100 is simply not adequate. Why have we been left behind?
We believe that the Faculty Deans, Finance Dpt and Students Union should take responsibility for drawing up and implementing a strategy of equality. It is hoped the induct of this petition, (once completed and sent to relevant university officials in a polite manner) will see an explanation for this funding decision sent to all 1st/2nd year students to eliminate confusion; and a percentage rise in the 'Books Plus' allowance to a more realistic/suitable and equal amount.
Please join the call for fair and effective financing.
Thank You.
