Our governments— and our arts councils — need to know that art and culture is essential to the health of Canadians. We can find new ways for galleries, theatres and other live venues to be open, and still follow physical distancing guidelines. We mustn't wait, as government commitment to the arts has always been fragile — and it would be an unacceptable blow for artists and lovers of the arts if live performances were suspended indefinitely.
Like other essential workers, artists will need financial support to integrate their work into the new normal. By signing this petition you will indicate to Canadian arts granting agencies that artists need funding to create environments where they can do their work, environments that will function just as physical distancing is — by necessity— integrated into our new reality.
