APPLEGROVE DESERVES A PERMANENT HOME

APPLEGROVE is an important community organization that makes a real difference for families, kids and seniors in our community.

On April 9th, Councillors on the City’s Economic and Community Development Committee will be discussing the future of APPLEGROVE. This is an important moment to communicate your support for finding a permanent home for APPLEGROVE so that it can continue to grow and thrive as part of this community.

For 45+ years Applegrove has been based out of Duke of Connaught School and also provided programming from many satellite locations in our community. APPLEGROVE values its connection with Duke of Connaught School and the S.H. Armstrong Recreation Centre next door, but is outgrowing its space and operating inside of a school presents challenges like lack of program space and limits on accessibility, operating hours and the range of services that can be offered. And with changes happening at school boards across the province it’s an uncertain time to be located in a school.

In the early 1990’s the City set aside funds for a permanent home for APPLEGROVE but then unfortunately took it away. Since 2019, City Council has requested that a permanent home be found for APPLEGROVE.

By signing this petition you are letting the Mayor and City Council know that you support a permanent home for APPLEGROVE.

Along with serving thousands of East End residents each year, APPLEGROVE has been a driving force in the development of the popular FOOD HUB on Gerrard at Glen Rhodes Church and was instrumental in helping the tenants and Toronto Community Housing to navigate the ups and downs of the incredible revitalization of DON SUMMERVILLE on Eastern Avenue. During the pandemic they made it their business to have regular phone calls and distribute food to hundreds of isolated seniors.

  • 3,000+ residents rely on Applegrove each year for programs, support and community connection.
  • 75% growth in seniors’ programs since 2015, helping reduce isolation and keep older adults connected.
  • Program participation doubled over 25 years, reflecting growing demand for accessible community services.
