Sub: Appeal for Justice for Dr Partho Sarothi Ray.

Dear Sir

We, the colleagues, students, and friends of Dr Partho Sarothi Ray, are deeply concerned over his arrest on the 8th of April 2012 and continued detention. He was arrested on the basis of alleged incidents that took place at Nonadanga (Kolkata) on the 4th of April 2012. However, Partho was present at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER)-Kolkata, Mohanpur campus, Haringhata on the 4th of April and stayed overnight in the campus guesthouse. He also participated in the faculty meeting of the Department of Biological Sciences in the afternoon of the 4th of April (Proof Enclosed).

Partho is a reputed scientist who after graduating from Presidency College, Kolkata joined the MS-PhD program of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He received the best thesis award from his Department at IISc, Bangalore. Subsequently, he did post-doctoral research work at the Lerner Research Institute, Cleveland Clinic in U.S.A. Since 2008, Partho has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at IISER Kolkata. He is a brilliant young scientist, well known in the international scientific community and has won several national and international awards. His work has been published in reputed international journals including “Nature” and “Cell”. He is a recipient of the prestigious “Wellcome Trust-DBT India Alliance” Intermediate Fellowship and is an Associate of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. He is also an excellent and very popular teacher as well as a valued colleague.

We, the colleagues and students of Dr Partho Sarothi Ray at IISER-Kolkata and the members of Indian academic community, condemn the arrest of our colleague in spite of his absence from Nonadanga on the 4th of April 2012. We would therefore like to request your kind intervention regarding this matter.

Thanking you for kind attention,
Sincerely
