There should be more of a free to play demo. In which you are limited until you subscribe. Such as limited decals.

If they play it smart, they will give people limited access. But think of it, the largest cost for the company will be data transmission, right? So they should limit the data that will go around for people who have a "free" account. Give them some standard items, generating little traffic. This will create publicity and a lot of people potentially able to buy a subscription. I believe that once people played the game as it was in 1.4.1 they will stick around and are willing to pay for it.
So in a way the people who pay will have all sort of customisation options which will generate traffic, which is covered by their subscription costs. At least I think this would be the smartest way to do it...
