The Mike Hardy Basketball Tournament has been a cornerstone of the Beta Iota Chapter of Sigma Nu's history for the past 36 years. The event itself honors a fallen brother, Mike Hardy, who passed away tragically in 1985. The proceeds raised through this event are directly donated to our philanthropy, the Ponery Orphanage in Kursk, Russia.

Last year we were sadly unable to hold the annual event due to a State lockdown mandate, as well as our dismissal from campus. The Ponery Orphanage relies on institutions like ours for funding.

Through careful planning, we created a self-contained event that only included the participation of those who live in our house. The donation system we created was completely virtual. We utilized a GoFundMe page and the individual donations of family, friends, and alumni via online banking apps. We found an outside venue that was willing to rent to us as a means to ensure we limit our exposure to outside guests. Along with the university’s guidelines, we would have been subject to the venue’s specific guidelines. Examples of these include wearing masks and maintaining social distance.

The University of Mount Union and its Administration have repeatedly denied our request to hold this event. Events similar to this have been sanctioned by the University over the course of the past few weeks. At a time when the campus community is being vaccinated and careful preparation has been made on our end, it makes no sense as to why the University will not sanction this event.

In light of the University's decision, we have developed an alternative plan to ensure that we keep Mike's memory alive, as well as raise money for the orphanage. This petition is meant to serve as a representation of our disapproval of the University's decision.

The Brothers of Sigma Nu ask that you show your support by signing this petition.

Thank you all for your time and support!

This isn't a party, this is a remembrance, and fundraising event for an orphanage in Russia. These young men at Sigma Nu are trying to do a good thing - and it is sad that the University doesn't seem to care. If this was a booster for the Football team, I bet the university would support that - that's honestly all they seem to care about. Personally, I except more from my alma mater

It sounds to me like this is a responsible group desiring to safely continue the support of a charity and an honorable tradition. It also sounds like UMU needs to be careful that they are not playing favorites when it comes to which events they are allowing.

This is a well planned, socially distanced and virtual event with online donations. It is a tradition that should be upheld. The orphanage has benefited for 36 years from this!

As I sign this, mount union just hours ago held an RPB event on campus with over 40 attendees from all corners of campus. As i sign this, sports teams hold regular training with more than 20 athletes, all from different houses on campus. As i sign this, plans for in person graduation, with likely over 200 attendees from all over the country will stand side by side in the bleachers. To ignore this is to ignore a bias university that only accepts events that supports their personal reputation or bank account.

Speaking from the standpoint of an alumnus of Mount Union and member of Sigma Nu. This is the most important event that the fraternity puts on that gets the community involved and is for a great cause. The fraternity has made accommodations for COVID making it brothers only. These guys live with each other and would conduct this event safely. To shut this down would be a huge blow to not only the fraternity but to the Ponery orphanage. Please reconsider allowing these boys to host the event. Joe Mertens Class of 2019 Beta Iota 1966
