There is a serious issue out here on the west coast of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, namely Stephenville. There is a danger that I have been trying to get help with in removing since October of last year. The danger that I am referring to is an anchor, I firmly believe that it posesa threat to the residents of Bay St. George and surrounding communities. The anchor itself is not the main issue, however its location is. The anchor is located down by Little Port Harmon and lies in the midst of a turnabout (which in and of itself is a bit confusing for anyone new to the area). The road to Little Port Harmon experiences a high volume of traffic throughout the run of a day and continues well into the night. The problematic times when accidents can occur are during the nighttime when it is dark and there are so few lights, especially near the anchor in question. I have made requests to the Stephenville Town Council to remove the anchor from its present position and relocate it to another area where people can enjoy it without having to worry about oncoming traffic. I expressed my concerns about the issue of safety surrounding the anchor and explained that on September 23, 2003 my nephew was killed when the car he was in smashed into the anchor and flipped over many times and threw him several hundred feet from the anchor. I think that if the anchor had not been there that my nephew would still be alive today. The Town Council of Stephenville's response to my request was to errect two caution signs 100 meters before you get to the anchor, however I felt that this soultions was not sufficient enough to warn the public of the impending danger that lay ahead. I first wrote the town council on October 5th, 2011 and twice more after, but they said that the caution signs were sufficient enough. I started a group on facebook to help gather support for this cause and I have 260+ members to date. I emailed MP Judy Foote, Tony Cornect, MHA for Port Au Port, and Joan Burke to gain their support. My facebook group is "littleportharmon@groups.facebook.com" and has various pictures of the anchor and its location. The council has chosen to largely ignore my requests, with the exception of erecting two Caution signs 100 meters before the anchor. While I did praise the effort of the council for putting up the signs, I did express my dissatisfaction in that the anchor was still not removed from its current location. There was an accident that occurred on Sunday April 22, 2012 involving the anchor in question and a result a young woman is at the Health Sciences Center in St. John's. Her family is obviously upset about this...they did not know that the Town Council was asked to remove it. I have spoken with the father of the victim about this issue and he wants to do whatever he can to help. Instead of laying blame at this point in time, I think it is in the best interest of the town council to remove this anchor immediately from its location. How many more people have to get hurt or die in order to rectify this situation. The solution is so easy...I do not understand council's reluctancy to move the anchor.....is it a money issue? If so...how much do they consider human life worth?? Let's call the Stephenville Town Council to ACTION....Help me prevent any further unnecessary accidents or tragedies!
