An open letter to Wayland Baptist University from alumni

This is ridiculous and stunning .

As someone who grew up in the Panhandle & is immensely grateful for having learned some things from the arts I am extremely saddened by this news. You can learn how to write technically almost anywhere, but a good arts community is immensely more valuable.

I chose Wayland because of its fine arts programs. Those programs played an irreplaceable role in the development of my character. I loved my time at Wayland. My heart goes out to all who are affected by these decisions.

I hope you'll think hard about this the next time you try to enjoy anything connected to the fine arts and that you'll be removing more people from that sphere of education. Bring back the fine arts to where they should be.

The arts are not just a program to be cut. They are vital to the mental health of our society.

I am a Wayland Baptist University Theatre Alumni and My heart is heavy about the loss of these programs. The theatre was my home and my fellow actors/majors and minors were my family. It’s a sad day. I understand budgeting restraints, but let’s keep the family together,

I think this is extremely short sighted, and this program produces some of the best alumns that Wayland stands for in the Community. All lot of programs especially the Athletics don't

I have several friends who are currently enrolled in a fine arts major who are devastated that they have to switch. Anything that would give them some better closure would be great.

My biggest question is what are the plans for the future. Is there a plan to try and bring the programs back in Time. I know in Higher Ed Covid has hit hard and cuts have to be made. So what's the plan for the future?

This is sad for me. My grandchildren graduated from Wayland, one with a Masters degree and a grandson-in-love who is a school band teacher/mentor. This decision will hurt the enrollment and the community. Please reconsider your consideration.

Please keep this! I know it has been so good for so many kids!

In 1976 the band program was restarting and I was privileged to be a part of that! While at Wayland, I played in every ensemble that French horn could play in, sang in the choir, stretched myself by performing in some theatre productions, graduated with a music ed degree and met my future husband. My life is richer because of the fine arts programs at Wayland. It breaks my heart to think that others will not have these opportunities.

I am not an alumni, but a sister of one. The fine arts made a positive impact on her life and it should not be tossed out so carelessly.
