An Open Letter Against Antisemitism from the Academy for Jewish Religion and the Claremont School of Theology
Joining together as a diverse but united community of faith, represented by the Christian and Jewish seminaries and theological schools of the Association of Theological Schools listed below and by the individual faith leaders who have signed, we unequivocally condemn the recent surge in antisemitism and the shameful acts of hate and violence it has spawned. We call on all people of faith to rededicate themselves to the “Great Commandments” – enshrined in the Hebrew Bible and so identified by Jesus: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind…and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

The surge of hate we are witnessing is a direct attack on our core values and we refuse to stay silent while these divisions are stoked. Behind the scenes we are coordinating with leaders across the country to ensure our message reaches the people who have allowed this vitriol to fester for too long. We need to keep pressure on the institutions that are choosing to look away instead of confronting this bigotry.

The momentum behind this call to action reveals that there are far more people committed to justice than there are purveyors of hate. We have reached a critical point where the institutions responsible for this climate can no longer pretend we are silent.

As a Christian I stand against and antisemitism and the shameful acts of hate and violence that harm the flourishing of people of Jewish descent. I also stand with the Jewish community as it promotes acts of love respect and kindness for all people that we may live together as one beloved community.
We at Sacred Heart house the Lux Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies and are actively engaged in promoting greater understanding and efforts to overcome antisemitism.

I stand with the variety of Jewish communities and others to condemn antisemitism and to promote the wellbeing, safety, and equity toward Jewish communities. Methodist Theological School in Ohio has long been an anti-racist, pro-equality and justice school. This statement reflects our stated and lived out values.
