I was on the original board as a scholar and was summarily dismissed, along with the other scholar, Dr. Allida Black. While I support the idea of a National Women's History Museum, and have from its inception, I have serious qualms about its current leadership, who seem almost opposed to involving professional historians and museum scholars.

If the National Women's History Museum expects to be considered a legitimate representation of the women's experience, it MUST have legitimate scholars of women's history at every single stage of the planning, development, executiion, and management of such a museum.

I strongly the support the opinions expressed by my fellow historians that professional historical expertise is an essential ingredient for any reputable women's history museum. Frankly, a museum that does not include the insights and critical perspective of women's historians would likely be worse for the cause of women than no museum at all.

The National Women's History Museum must engage a diverse and learned council of women's historians, who will help the Museum create an authoritative and accurate account of our country's history. Any pursuer of historical truth must not be afraid to change the familiar narratives we have learned, if those narratives are wrong. The integrity of a museum depends on that institution's willingness to advocate on behalf of the truth, and that is the vocation of a historian.

The best museums combine the talents and knowledge of museum professionals, scholars and fundraisers. The NWHM should meet the same high standards as the other regional and national institutions. Moreover, given the diverse experiences of women in the United States, the Commission creating the NWHM must reflect diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and scholarship. The changes to the bill requested in this petition will ensure that both those goals are met.

Thorough research forms the only solid basis for any effective interpretation. There is now a huge body of research relating to the history of U.S. women, and we need to be sure that it is included in any museum interpretive programs.

Without the scientific expertise of professional women's historians, the NWHM risks being a great big fraud, uncritically parroting half-truths and peddling misunderstandings. All Americans deserve better than that, and ALL American womens' contributions to their nation's history deserve sensitive treatment and recognition.

It is a mistake to think that infrastructure planning is separate from content planning. Historians must be involved at every step of museum development so that policy, design, and content work in harmony.
