To the Hon Prime Minister Julia Gillard, We, the medical students of Australia, call upon the Australian government to recognise the impacts that climate change will have on human health, in substantially increasing global morbidity and mortality. We urge the government to take immediate and sustainable action to reduce the effects of climate change on health by ensuring that Australia achieves the greatest feasible reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, at a minimum of 40% of 1990 levels by 2020, and 80% by 2050 (in accordance with IPCC recommendations). We note the successes of the UK's Sustainable Development Unit in developing a path for sustainable healthcare. We look to the Australian government to fund a similar federal unit under the Health and Ageing portfolio, allowing the Australian health system to fulfil its potential as a leading sustainable and low carbon healthcare service, thereby further improving health with the added co-benefit of reducing institutional costs and saving tax-payer dollars. Finally, we call for meaningful collaboration between ministers responsible for health and for the environment, to ensure that health is a priority in any future climate change agreements or actions.
