I fully support any plan or piece of equipment that will keep a first responder safe. We need to ensure that they are protected and are able to render aid to those in need, rather than them needing aid themselves.

The protocol for scene safety was never all that safe to begin with. If emergency providers are at risk and willing to pay for their own vests, there's no reason this needs to be impeded.

First responders need protection regardless of their roles; the scene can become unsafe very quickly, and bureaucratic nonsense about difficulty changing policy should have no bearing on ensuring that protection is available.

Emergency responders arriving to a scene that has not been secured is placing their own safety at risk. Also, after a scene that has been secured by law enforcement, there is a possibility of unaccounted individuals returning to the scene. If the problem lies in the perception of how society will view emergency responders with bulletproof vests as an extension of law enforcement, then the design of the vests needs to make it apparent that responders are their own entity - different color vest with the EMS on the front and back. News reporters sent to the front lines in conflict areas would wear bulletproof vests that displayed 'PRESS'.
