I don’t believe that ARFC did not have enough revenue to support heating and maintaining the tennis courts. I saw virtually no improvements made to the roof (leaking and staining the courts) and cleanliness around the courts was lacking while tennis unlimited fees continued to rise each year. If ARFC would have offered incentives for reduced fees for early bird and late night tennis, as well as promoted the sport within the community, perhaps there would have been even more participation. Many similar facilities around the state with comparable membership seem to thrive with lower fees and better facilities. It wasn’t that long ago when ARFC had one of the top youth tennis programs, active men’s and women’s leagues, tie-in with ISU’s women’s tennis program, and it was difficult to book a court in the evening. It would be a shame to see a college town this size lose indoor courts.

Indoor tennis is part of an active lifestyle for Iowans during the winter months. We need to encourage physical activity in every way possible.

While I whole-heartedly support the idea of indoor courts and will greatly miss the current courts next year, I disagree with the reference of a "thriving" tennis community. If this was truly a thriving tennis community, ARFC would be building courts at the new facility. It's not because the courts do not generate enough revenue to justify the expense, demonstrating that tennis is on the decline in Ames. I feel it is extremely important to accurately portray our passionate cause as we face a very large uphill battle to have indoor courts moving forward.

I wholeheartedly support this petition. It is a very important sport for all ages -- adults, children, and youths.
