WE, the undersigned, citizens and legal residents of the United States Exercising our Constitutional rights under the First Amendment to the Constitution, Do hereby petition the PRESIDENT of the United States, Barrack Obama and the Secretary of Defense Mr. Gates for a redressof grievances, That being: That Female Members of the Armed Forces should not be required, ordered, encouraged or in any way made to wear an Islamic religious symbol such as the HIJAB wherever they may be serving. This includes Afghanistan, Iraq, UAE, or anywhere else whether in or out of the United States. For the following reasons: Male and female members of the Armed Services are equal in status and value and the women members should not be singled out and subjected to the imposition of requirements in dress to which the male members are not subjected, whatever the purported reason. The imposition of a religious symbol such as the HIJAB upon members of the Armed Forces of the United States is a clear violation of the Separation of Church and State. The favoring of a particular religious practice or symbol in this case Islam, is also in violation of the Establishment Clause and insensitive to the members of other religious groups such as Jews, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists etc Therefore for all of the stated reasons and others not stated we demand that the President and Secretary of Defense actively protect the dignity of women in the Military as well as the religious rights of all Americans and issue an order forbidding the wearing of such a religious symbol such as the HIJAB.
