American Airlines HDQ Smoking Ban
· As smoking bans sweep the country, more employers are creating smoke-free campuses
· But here at AA HDQ, we’re still exposed to secondhand smoke in common areas such as the atriums, parking garages, and docks
· Secondhand smoke is carcinogenic to humans
· The U.S. Surgeon General confirmed that even occasional exposure to secondhand smoke is harmful, and that even low levels of exposure create conditions linked to heart attack and stroke
· Secondhand smoke exposure has other serious negative health consequences including headaches, breathing problems, nausea, and asthma attacks
· Drifting tobacco smoke, even outdoors, can cause these and additional serious health problems in nonsmokers
· Since separate or designated smoking areas do not contain secondhand smoke, they are ineffective at protecting workers
· Smoking is a choice. And all AA smokers are afforded (free of charge) smoking cessation assistance through the HealthMatters program
· Smokers' insistence on smoking on campus does not justify endangering other employees' health
· Let’s create a complete culture of wellness
· Let’s help smokers make healthy choices by eliminating their options to smoke on campus
· Let’s improve productivity by cutting smoke breaks out of the AA HDQ workday
· And let’s end secondhand smoke exposure for those that already make healthy choices
· This grass roots petition was encouraged by members of the HealthMatters program to facilitate the implementation of an HDQ wide smoking ban
