We, the undersigned alumni of the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School (“Penn Law”), denounce the horrific acts of terrorism perpetrated by the terrorist organization Hamas against innocent lives in Israel. We write to express our disappointment with the leadership at Penn Law for failing to denounce these acts of terror, and support their Jewish student body and alumni in the wake of these atrocities.

We stand by the people of the State of Israel, Jewish people around the world, and the thousands of families whose lives will never be the same in the aftermath of these atrocities. The attack on October 7, 2023, was the largest massacre of Jews in a single day since the Holocaust. The heinous crimes committed by Hamas include the unimaginable: murder, rape, mutilation, and torture of men, women, the elderly, children, and babies. Hamas brutally murdered over 1,400 people and is holding hostage more than 200. Hamas continues to terrorize Israelis and has launched thousands of rockets aimed at civilians in Israel. Like the Nazis, Hamas has made its goal clear in its charter, – Judenrein – the complete cleansing of the Jewish people. This is the driving force behind their horrific acts of violence. There is no justification for the evil that took place and continues to take place today. We firmly reject any false comparison or equivalency of Hamas’s horrendous acts of terrorism to Israel’s necessary efforts to defend its people. We express unequivocal support for the State of Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorism.

The education we received at Penn Law taught us the importance of using our voices to stand up for good and denounce evil. The unjustifiable and heinous acts of Hamas must elicit a universal and clear response of condemnation. Publicly denouncing these actions and standing with the victims in Israel and the global Jewish community is all of our responsibility. Failure to do so is a moral failure of the school’s leadership. We, alumni of Penn Law, implore the Penn Law administration to urgently speak against the evil that has taken place, stand with Israel’s right to defend itself, and ensure that each of its Jewish students is safe and feels safe. As Elie Weisel remarked, "silence encourages the tormentor" and to date, there has been a deafening silence from our alma mater. Silence like this enables and perpetuates further antisemitic acts - something that has already played out. As recently as October 16, 2023, “protestors” marched down Locust Walk, the main thoroughfare of the University campus, chanting "there is only one solution, intifada revolution" and stating that "there are no civilians, they are all targets." Make no mistake, this is a call for the death of Jews.

Beneath the University of Pennsylvania Seal and Arms it is written: Leges sine Moribus vanae (“Laws without morals are useless”). Penn Law, be the voice of morality and speak up.

The mass slaughter of Jews is wrong and evil.

The intentional targeting and killing of innocent civilians is the very definition of terrorism.

Hamas is a terrorist organization and there is no justification for its actions.

Condemning acts of terrorism is our moral obligation.

These are basic and simple truths that are affirmed by each of us, and we call on Penn Law to do the same. We further call on Penn Law to take affirmative steps to ensure that the campus remains a safe place for Jewish students.

We mourn the tremendous loss of each and every life taken by Hamas’s evil acts. We pray for the safe and swift return of the hostages. We yearn for safety and peace.
