Growing up as a Muslim student, prayer has always been a cornerstone of my daily routine. It is a part of my identity, a source of comfort, and a practice that guides me spiritually. However, recently, at Winston Churchill School, there has been a troubling development: students who wish to pray or practice their faith are now being restricted. We were told that our prayers somehow intimidate others, which seems an unfair and unfounded accusation.

This prohibition not only affects Muslim students but also impacts others who want to observe significant aspects of their faith. Imagine being asked to put aside a vital part of your life — something that defines and uplifts you. This denial of religious freedom is not just about prayer; it's about respecting diversity and acknowledging our multicultural society.

In the UK, we pride ourselves on community and inclusion. The Human Rights Act 1998, Article 9, ensures everyone has the freedom of thought, conscience, and religion. Our laws protect our right to practice our beliefs, and these rights should extend within school walls as part of the UK’s commitment to equal rights for every individual.

We are proposing simple solutions: a Multicultural prayer room when possible and a commitment to educate the school community on the importance of religious freedom. Implementing these changes would not disrupt the school’s environment but rather enrich it through understanding and respect.

It's crucial that Winston Churchill School aligns itself with these values by allowing students to pray and practice their faith freely. This change will enable us not to feel like outsiders but as valued members of our school community.

Please sign this petition and support our call for religious freedom and the right to practice our faith without prejudice or restriction.
