As an athlete, and also as a performer, I would like to say I am very disappointed in the directors! When I attended Mohawk, I was always able to manage my music, and also my athletics! I understand some points, but in the end the directors have no right to exclude kids from athletics, because of there own personal reasons!

To shadow Emily Robertson's post..... These students were told the DAY of Auditions that they had to CHOOSE. They were fully prepared to Audition and already made a Commitment to their Sports Teams. Our children have successfully done BOTH for the 7 years and 8 productions that I have been involved with. Why are they being made to choose Now? We are losing students who have been performing since they were in 7th grade, because they are runners, basketball players, skiers, etc.... this is not right?!

By putting a dividence between those who participate in athletics and the performing arts are being categorized into rolls. A high school should never put limits on young students to have to choose or pick between what category of activities they need to specifically belong to.

I do think students should be held to a strict rehearsal attendance policy. However, it should be up to the students and parents to decide if they are able to juggle both. Excluding athletes goes against the spirit of our school. What was most disturbing was the lack of clear communication. The kids should have been notified in advance, not on the day of auditions, what the expectations were.

While the school has changed in many ways the 1 st priority used to be for the full educational experience of the students. It is about the kids not the teachers or it used to be. Teachers already have their education.

I have spent a lot of time bragging about how wonderful it is that Amar is able to participate in sports and theater. In my oldest son's , Skylar, senior year he gave up track to be in the play West Side Story. He loved that experience. But that was his only time on stage. Very sad. So when Amar was able to do both, and very well by the way, I thought Mohawk was progressing. Now the school is going backward. The director of the play gets a very good stipend. He is paid to change his schedule, the students are not.

Though I no longer attend Mohawk, in my years there, athletes made up a good portion, if not the majority, of those participating in theatre and I fear excluding them will only lead to bad things for Mohawk theatre.

Mohawk is a small school, and the student body often transcends the lines that separate kids in larger institutions. I think this is an asset, not only to the school as a whole, but to each child, as they're able to explore many interests, and learn with, and from, their peers. This is about the students!

This has been a longstanding predicament for Mohawk students. We should encourage youth to be well rounded, ambitous and learn how to juggle varried interests. It will help them be better equipped to handle the world, and will contribute to the strength of both the athletic and drama departments at Mohawk HS.

As an alumn who was caught in this same predicament, I feel this sends the wrong message regarding inclusion and discriminates against very motivated individuals. I can understand schedules being a necessity and so do the students who are committing to and meeting them, they should be given the opportunity to strive for these goals.

Seeing as most of the senior boys in the theater department are also key athletes on the teams they compete for, it would be lovely for theater to not throw us to the wayside... Especially seeing that these same sports teams have already made sacrifices for us to do the theater that we all love to do.
