Why we should allow gum in the classroom

We should allow gum in learning environments, because science has proved that gum can help increase productivity while studying. The best kind of gum for studying is plain peppermint and this is because it has a very simple flavor and not much to take in. If students chew gum while studying and they are allowed to chew during the test it can actually help people remembered their notes. According to a 14 week experiment with 108 students from ages 13-16 done by Baylor College of Medicine, students scored 3 percent higher in standardized math tests. Also they did extremely better on math tests and they also saw that they took less breaks during testing. Plus the constant chewing makes their gums stronger. Sometimes it even helps clean teeth say your 5th period teacher lets them chew it so they clean off the stuck on plague right from lunch because for a healthy mouth you should clean teeth after every meal, but we can't do lunch because of the short time to get to class.

The number one reason teachers have against gum is the mess of cleaning up the gum well students are going to chew it anyway and if we just let them then boom the mess would go away. Another idea is to get a single piece of gum then teachers can input students names and if they had gum into a middle school wide database like a google sheet, and a student can say can i have a piece of gum (students can donate gum to teachers ) then the teacher writes the name and when they asked for gum. Then when the student was done with it he/she just says “I’m done with my gum” and the teacher marks the time in which he/she returned it. If students don’t return the gum by the end of the period then they will be allowed to go onto the next class and when the student returns it then the new teacher will check off the log.

Alright now some more reasons for gum, when you chew gum it makes your heart pump faster. That means more oxygen to the brain so better thinking it also raises the glucose level making students more alert. It should be at least allowed for big tests and like I said before it can make them perform better 26% to 36% better could be the difference between a fail and a pass. Not only that but gum helps to sooth the mind so they can process and store more information. According to a study by the University of Northumbria and the Cognitive Research Unit in England says that gum helps short-term and long-term memories as much as 35 percent helps with tests.

Another big issue is that it is disruptive, well teachers can punish abuse with bans from gum for a day and I think we all can agree that being respectful with gum is worth that price.
