Allow Girls to Wear Skorts for PE Kit
LOGS school has removed skorts from the PE uniform without consultation with either parents or pupils, replacing them with the same traditionally masculine shorts for all pupils in a bid to make the uniform 'more inclusive'. This has caused distress and worry to many of the school's female students who prefer wearing skorts for a number of reasons, listed below.
1. The uniform terms have been changed to move away from 'traditional gender uniform' in order to make non-binary and trans students feel more comfortable. This doesn't however take into consideration, and therefore involve inclusivity, for those students who feel more comfortable in a more traditionally gender specific uniform.
2. Inclusivity should include the girls' rights to be girls and express their femininity. This right should not be removed from them and gender-neutrality uniform should not be forced on those wishing to be gender-specific.
3. Many girl pupils have expressed how much they enjoyed wearing skorts as part of the PE kit and are uncomfortable, both physically and emotionally, wearing shorts instead.
4. Many girls have expressed that shorts do not feel as secure to wear during their periods. The skorts were more fitted than the shorts, thus providing a feeling of better security.
5. Encouraging girls to do sports can be a challenge for parents, and having a further barrier to this in the form of PE kit is unhelpful and unnecessary.
6. Many female students have complained to their parents that the fabric used in the shorts are not as comfortable as that used in the skorts. Some have taken to rolling the shorts up in order to tackle this issue, which looks far worse than the skorts.
7. The shorts are the same design for both boys and girls, which is inclusive in the fact that every one is wearing the same, but completely overlooking the physical differences in biology and therefore cannot comfortably fit both boys and girls.
8. True inclusivity would allow each pupil to choose to wear either the traditionally masculine or feminine uniform based on their personal gender identity and gender expression.
9. Poorly conceived regulations can lessen the respect for all regulations and undermines the school's authority and credibility.
10. From an ecological standpoint, the amount of skorts now going to landfill is very high!
We, the undersigned, would ask the school to review this policy with a view to making it truly inclusive by still allowing those who wish to express their feminine identity.
