City by-law No. 1288-2008 adopted by City of Toronto Council on December 3, 2008 reduced left turn lanes from eastbound Harbour street to Younge street to only one (the left-hand) lane and disallowed left turns from the central lane. This was done contrary to City Stuff Assessment http://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2008/te/bgrd/backgroundfile-17081.pdf and, as the assessment predicted, created dangerous situation at the intersection when drivers exiting Gardener Expressway are forced either make two lane changes in less than 500 feet in high traffic, or make now-illegal left turn into Younge street from the central lane. Moreover, as published in Toronto Star http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/fixer/article/744469--yonge-st-ticket-trap-protects-pedestrians this regulation created a very cozy “fishing hole” for 52 Toronto Police Division, letting up to three police officers at the same time ticket dozens if not hundreds of drivers everyday without leaving this intersection … and without improving public safety either… Sign this petition to: 1. Return common sense rules to this intersection to allow better and safer traffic flow, 2. Get rid of this completely unfair and too cozy police trap and freeing officers to work on other offences… where it really matters 3. Help hundreds of people who got improper left turn tickets at this intersection to fight these tickets in court.
