Presently, HRM Solid Waste only allows curbside pickup of bagged recyclables. Many residents have invested money in storage containers (similar the ones that hold compost) to hold blue bags of recyclables. This solution is cleaner and prevents animals from breaking open bags and spreading waste throughout their neighbourhoods and the overall environment.

Recently, those doing curbside collection have begun to ‘orange sticker’ these bins and not remove the bags within. In communication with HRM, it was learned that the contract with the haulers only requires collection of bagged recyclables at the curb.

Later this year, it is anticipated that HRM Council will consider changes to the curbside collection program. This petition asks Council to approve these bins as part of HRM’s curbside collection program.
