I've been so proud of Davidson over the last couple of years, and the leadership the college and Dr. Quillen have exhibited. It would be a tremendous step backwards to let the fears and anger of a small group of people reverse the strides that have been made. Davidson has the chance to shine as a true leader and pioneer, and to make choices according to its values. Please, stay the course.

Davidson class of ‘87. I have been proud of my alma mater’s willingness to address difficult aspects of our history as a way of moving into the future with integrity.

Michael Dickens ‘69 I fully support the effort of ALENDA (great name fellow alumni).  It saddens me that so many of the supporters of the DFTD group are from the years that were my time at Davidson.   Davidson is certainly not perfect but I believe it is an immeasurably better place today then it was when I went there in the 60’s.  Much of the credit for that progress goes to the leadership of the college.  Leaders that led us through the milestone events listed in the letter of petition and more.  I believe the most recent changes in the ByLaws were essential if Davidson was going to be faithful to the values in which we say we believe.   We must show the DFTD group that yes we appreciate their support of and gifts to Davidson in the past.  Those gifts, however, don’t entitle the DFTD group or any group of alumni to try and alter the fundamental truth invoked by Martin Luther King Jr in his 1968 speech at the National Cathedral.  He said that “We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.” In the late 60’s if not before the arc of Davidson’s Moral Universe began bending towards Justice.  That movement has accelerated particularly in the last 23 years under the leadership of our presidents Bobby Vagt, Tom Ross and Carol Quillen.  Personally I will do whatever I can do to help Davidson to continue that noble calling of becoming more just, more diverse and more humane.

Attended Davidson College in 1981-82 for JYA in Montpellier. Grew up in Davidson, and both of my parents worked at the college.
